Bluesky Outage: Coordinated Traffic Attack Causes Widespread Errors

If Bluesky has been acting up lately, you’re not alone.Feeds won’t load.Notifications vanish.

And sometimes the app just gives up entirely.Behind the scenes, the platform has been dealing with a sustained distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that stretched outages into a second day.The disruption hit core features across the app and highlights a familiar issue in tech: even newer, decentralized platforms still rely on infrastructure that can falter under heavy, targeted traffic.

DDoS attack disrupts Bluesky services Bluesky said it began investigating service issues early Thursday after outages started around 1:42 a.m.ET.The disruptions continued throughout the day and into the next, affecting feeds, notifications, threads, and search.

According to Engadget, by evening, the company had identified the cause. It said it had been mitigating “a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack,” which intensified throughout the day.TechCrunch reported users encountered repeated errors, including “Rate Limit Exceeded” messages when accessing popular feeds or profiles.

The outages were intermittent. Some parts of the app worked, others didn’t, and sometimes they switched places. What users are seeing during the outage Some users can still access their personal feeds.

Others encounter blank screens, slow loading times, or error messages that require multiple refresh attempts.Popular areas like Discover have struggled the most, often returning rate-limit errors.Even Bluesky’s own status page experienced interruptions at times, making it harder to track updates.

Bluesky told Endgadget it has “not seen any evidence of unauthorized access to private user data,” addressing concerns about potential security risks.Must-read security coverage UK Police Convicts Pair in £5.5 Billion Bitcoin Launder Case Blackpoint Cyber vs.Arctic Wolf: Which MDR Solution is Right for You? DDoS attacks flood systems with traffic, forcing services to limit or reject legitimate requests. In Bluesky’s case, that has led to uneven performance instead of a full outage.Reports also indicated that key API servers experienced prolonged downtime, further exacerbating instability.
