Windows 11 just broke Microsoft accounts for some PCs

Just days after reporting that some systems couldn’t access their C: drives due to a buggy Samsung app, Windows devices are now greeted with ‘You’ll need the Internet for this’ error across Microsoft’s own apps. This time, the issue is directly tied to Windows 11’s March Tuesday patch update (KB5079473).What was supposed to be a routine security fix has instead triggered a bizarre sign-in error.

Windows 11 update causes sign-in failures Several Microsoft services are currently preventing people from logging into their own accounts. This time, the company is owning up to the mess and has confirmed that the KP5079473 update is breaking Microsoft account authentication. The impact isn’t limited to one or two apps, but for Teams, OneDrive, core apps like Edge, Excel, Word, and even Copilot.

The error message is particularly frustrating and misleading. The problem shows up after installing last week’s cumulative update. When you try signing in to any Microsoft app that relies on a Microsoft account, the system tells you that you’re not connected to the internet, despite having a perfectly functional connection.

The bug affects Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.Enterprise users authenticating through Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) are spared from facing the sign-in issue. This suggests that it is specifically a consumer-facing problem, which means home users and small businesses are bearing the brunt of it.

While the company has acknowledged the issue, its response is quite vague.Microsoft recommends restarting your PC while connected to the internet in the hope that the error will resolve on its own.Owners are warned that the problem can return if the device is rebooted without an active internet connection.

There’s no permanent fix yet, but Microsoft is working on a resolution.Until then, affected owners are stuck with the restart route. It’s been a busy month for damage control at Microsoft with multiple issues hitting its devices.

Unlike the inaccessible C: drive scare earlier, this is a confirmed bug tied to the Windows 11 update. It’s not huge as your files and system remain intact. But the problem does hit a critical layer of everyday usability if you use Microsoft services.
