Yes, IDE drives first came out in 1986.Undergoing several revisions, the connection standard grew from a blazing 8.3MB/s transfer speeds on the original version to 133MB/s in its final iteration.The thing is, IDE drives were largely phased out in the mid 2000s, with SATA being released in 2003, the new standard fully took over by around 2007.

SATA drives, also known as serial ATA, increased the transfer speeds by quite a bit.The connector also shrank a lot, and allowed for drives to be made more compact and light.IDE drives simply have no place in your setup in 2026.

They offer abysmal transfer speeds, are ancient technology at this point, and there’s no modern computer that even supports the connection standard natively.Just use SATA or SAS for your mass storage drives.SSHDs It was a great technology for its time, but just doesn’t serve a purpose anymore.

I still remember it like it was yesterday.I had a 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro, and I wanted to make it run faster.At the time, a SSD with any decent amount of storage just wasn’t feasible to buy for someone like me at the time.

The way it worked was having a small SSD partition for certain frequently-accessed files to live on, with platters for the bulk of your storage.This was a fantastic piece of tech for the mid-2010s, but in 2026, it just doesn’t make sense.A 1TB SSD now costs around $100 (or $72 in 2013) and offers the same amount of storage for a fraction of what it used to cost.

If you’re still using a SSHD in 2026, it’s time to retire it.The hybrid drive has served its purpose, and you should totally pick up something newer and more reliable.Please, whatever you do, don’t buy a SSHD brand-new in 2026 though.

It’s just too old.eMMC eMMC needs to die like microUSB.While technically solid-state, eMMC storage is the bane of solid-state storage technologies.

If you didn’t know, eMMC stands for embedded MultiMediaCard.It’s effectively a flash drive that’s embedded on the motherboard, of sorts.The problem with eMMC is its storage controller, which is far less robust than SATA controllers, or even the technology that we use in modern microSD cards.

Really, eMMC storage was designed to give manufacturers a low-cost way to say, “Hey, this computer has solid-state storage!” because it does.Compared to modern SATA SSDs, or even better, M.2 NVMe, eMMC storage is abysmally slow.Even the latest microSD cards can read and write nearly 10x faster than eMMC storage.

Almost all smartphones have moved from eMMC storage to UFS (or Universal Flash Storage) these days as well, which has much better endurance and performance than the older embedded MultiMediaCard.eMMC storage is simply too old to use in 2026.Please don’t buy any modern computers with this archaic storage technology.

Low-end SD cards Class 4? Not even 3D printers use these anymore.Speaking of SD cards, there’s no reason you should have a SD card that’s slower than class 10 these days.I have two 3D printers in the office right now—the Bambu Lab P1S and P2S.

My P1S, which uses a microSD card for its onboard storage, recently had the microSD die.I grabbed an old class 4 microSD card I still had lying around for some reason and it…didn’t work.It technically worked for storing the 3D print files, but I couldn’t record time lapses on it.

Even Raspberry Pis need faster than class 4 SD cards as boot drives if you want any form of performance out of them.The Nintendo Switch needs so much performance that Nintendo had to move away from traditional microSD cards entirely to a newer microSD Express standard, which uses NVMe and PCIe technology to deliver faster read and write speeds.Your class 4 SD and microSD cards might still work in some instances, but faster class 10 cards are so cheap that you really should just replace them at this point.

Mechanical hard drives (as boot drives) Your computer will thank you later.Close Listen, I have a of mechanical hard drives surrounding me right now, even in 2026.My storage server has 12 in it, and my other NAS has two more mechanical drives in it.

My virtual machine server has yet another for my NVR recordings.The thing is, none of these systems use a mechanical drive to boot from.Mechanical hard drives are fantastic for mass storage, don’t get me wrong, but they’re just simply not great boot drives.

Modern mechanical hard drives top out at around 200MB/s, while SATA SSDs get closer to 600MB/s and M.2 NVMe drives are pushing over 13,000MB/s.A PCIe 5.0 NVMe drive is over 60 times faster than a spinning mechanical hard drive.If your computer still uses a mechanical hard drive to boot from, it’s time to swap that out for of a solid-state drive.
