2025 Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology Announces Panels

Running August 6-10, the event plans a range of insightful talks, featuring industry experts discussing the future of storytelling, animation, and media, starting August 8.
The 2025 edition of the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology (PFCAT) is set to present a range of insightful panels, featuring industry experts discussing the future of storytelling, animation, and media.This year’s event includes six dynamic panels, beginning on August 8 and continuing on August 9 at The Auditorium at OMSI.

Over the five-day festival, PFCAT will present over 170 films and animations as well as parties and networking events.The festival kicks off with the exclusive panel “Crafting Stories: Mark Roberts and Jon Raymond” Friday, August 8.Mark Roberts, known for TV shows like and , alongside Jon Raymond, will discuss the process of writing for both screen and stage.

This event is free to the public and offers a unique opportunity for aspiring writers and established storytellers alike to dive deep into the art of crafting memorable narratives.Additional PFCAT panels running August 9 are as follows: Behind the Scenes: Creating Worlds with Digital Technology From 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at OMSI, artists and animators will explore how digital technology brings animated characters and worlds to life.Panelists will showcase the tools and techniques used to create modern animation, with live demonstrations of tablets like Wacom and other essential technologies.

Following the discussion, attendees will have the chance to try out these tools and connect with local film, TV, and animation organizations at dedicated tables.The Art of Voice Acting in Animation, Ads & Games From 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm, go behind the scenes of voice acting.Discover how voice actors bring animated characters, video game personas, and commercial spots to life.

Industry experts will share insights into their creative techniques and provide advice for anyone interested in pursuing voice acting as a career.  Breaking Boundaries with Innovative Distribution Strategies From 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, filmmakers Anna Campbell, Joey Clift, Baret O’Brien, and Kitty Norton will discuss how new digital platforms and crowdfunding are disrupting traditional film distribution.Attendees will learn how today’s creators bypass traditional gatekeepers, using streaming and self-empowered strategies to reach global audiences.This panel will explore innovative ways to distribute work and succeed in today’s evolving media landscape.

Stop-Motion and the Path to Television From 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm, this panel will explore how stop-motion animation is transforming television.Panelists, including Melanie Coombs, Michael Granberry, Paul Hollingsworth, and Tom Gibbons will discuss the artistry and technical innovations of stop-motion, and how it has found a home in today’s fast-evolving TV landscape.Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how stop-motion integrates with live-action to create groundbreaking storytelling.

Beyond the Basics: Crowdfunding Secrets and Strategies for 2025 The final panel of the day, from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm, will focus on the ever-evolving world of crowdfunding.Filmmakers with successful campaigns will share strategies, creative tactics, and tips for running a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2025.Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your approach, this panel will provide practical advice for turning your ideas into funded projects.

PFCAT presents visionary and diverse works from filmmakers and animators.In 2002, the festival rebranded from its previous name, The International Festival of Cinema and Technology.Admission to festival panels is $10 for adults, $9 seniors, and $8 youth, with $2 off for OMSI members.
