Lucid teases the design of its more affordable Cosmos EV

Lucid Motors is hinging much of its future on the Cosmos EV and you finally have a chance to see what that make-or-break car looks like. The startup has registered the midsize electric crossover's design at the European Union Intellectual Property Office, and it's now clear what you can expect. The filing (searchable as design number 015142895) reflects both what Lucid privately showed investors in March as well as camouflaged protoypes that reached public roads in May.

It's effectively a more compact version of the three-row Gravity SUV, just with a more sloped rear and more conspicuous branding.Multiple trim levels appear in the filing, backing Lucid's past claims that there will be a performance model that handles a 0-60MPH dash in 3.5 seconds. The interior might do away with Lucid's elaborate multi-display setups, however, instead focusing on one large screen.

This will help with Lucid's Uber robotaxi partnership (it just recently expanded to Houston), but should also make the Cosmos more affordable. This is a design patent, so minor details could still change.Even so, it's likely this represents the core of what Lucid intends to launch.

Lucid Gravity SUV 2027 Base: $79,900 Base Trim Engine EV Powered by Expand Collapse Lucid Cosmos price and release date It's the company's most important EV yet Lucid hopes to release the Cosmos later in 2026 with a price below $50,000, although the EV could climb above $70,000 for the highest-end configurations. That makes it much less expensive than the company's cheapest car to date, the $70,900 Air Pure. The rugged midsize Earth SUV is expected to carry similar pricing as a 2028 model year car.

The lower price will come not just through less exotic technology, but smarter construction.Lucid is prepping an Atlas drivetrain that will not only be 23% lighter than current motors, but will use 30% fewer parts. That, in turn, will let the Cosmos use a relatively smaller and cheaper 69kWh battery while still topping 300 miles of estimated range.

The Cosmos (along with the Earth) could be key to not only making Lucid a major player in EVs, but give it the shipments it needs to finally turn a profit after years of losses.Source: EUIPO
