The MacBook Neo has a hidden hardware advantage

Apple debuted its affordable MacBook Neo earlier this month. For more than a decade, the company's laptops have been difficult to repair due to glued-down batteries, soldered ports, and layers of adhesive tape.It turns out that the MacBook Neo is a very different story.

A teardown video shared by Australian YouTuber repair channel Tech Re-Nu shows the entry-level notebook from the brand being completely disassembled in just six minutes.Modular design, zero tape To open up the MacBook Neo, only eight screws on the bottom need to be removed. What’s surprising is the near-total absence of adhesive.

Only the cable connecting the trackpad to the mainboard is slightly taped. This is a first for a Mac since the Retina MacBook Pro way back in 2012.The internal components on the MacBook Neo are secured with standard Torx (T3, T5, T8) screws.

The battery is held with 18 screws, which is a notable change, thus making replacements far simpler.Previous MacBook models have batteries glued to the chassis, so you would have to deal with the strong adhesive strips. Both USB-C ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the speakers can be swapped independently without replacing the entire logic board.

The WiFi and Bluetooth antennas can also be taken out easily.Easier keyboard repairs Apart from the teardown video, Apple’s official repair documentation reveals that the keyboard on the MacBook Neo can be replaced on its own.The company lists separate service parts for the keyboard, keyboard with Touch ID, and the top case that can be replaced individually.

The process still requires removing more than 40 screws, but it is much easier than before.A damaged keyboard on the MacBook Neo wouldn’t require taking out the entire top case—the aluminum shell surrounding the keyboard. The top case on many Air and Pro models also accommodates the battery and speakers, along with the keyboard.
