The cross-platform notes tool Obsidian just received a massive update.Obsidian 1.12 on desktop platforms includes a command line interface for scripting and automating with your notes, and the mobile apps have a few new tricks as well. The main attraction in this update is Obsidian CLI, which allows you to read and write your notes from a terminal application or automated script.
You can open your daily note, add or search tasks, search your vault, compare different versions of a file, create new notes from templates, manage plugins, move notes, and much more. There are dozens of commands—"Anything you can do in Obsidian you can do from the command line," the documentation says. You have to enable Obsidian CLI before using it, by opening the app settings and navigating to General > Command line interface.
After that, you can use it by running the "obsidian" command in your terminal emulator of choice, and it works in scripts like any other CLI tool. This is a great upgrade if you prefer to work in the terminal, or if you want to create and sort your notes through Bash or PowerShell scripting. For example, you could have a setup script for a software project that prints your documentation notes, or an automation that saves the result of an API query to a new note.
It's also an interface that generative AI tools like GitHub Copilot or Claude could access as needed.Obsidian 1.12 on desktop platforms also adds the ability to resize images in live preview by dragging from the corner, and there's a new prompt to delete attachments when you delete a file.Copying text from the editor also now includes HTML formatting, which fixes issues with pasting into Google Docs and other similar applications.
There are also many bug fixes, including the outline view no longer flickering while typing, and the 'More options' menu not closing.Meanwhile, Obsidian 1.12 on mobile has a few improvements, but mostly just for iOS devices. There's a new Share extension to save content toy our vault from other apps, like Safari or social media apps, without the need to open Obsidian.
The update also has a new Shortcut action, called Bookmark Link, which can save URLs as Obsidian bookmarks.Subscribe to our newsletter for Obsidian updates Join our newsletter for focused, hands-on coverage of Obsidian - major releases, the new CLI, mobile features, and automation use cases.Subscribe for clear explanations and practical walkthroughs of these updates.
