PSA: You'll need a new charger to take advantage of iPhone 17 Pro's fast charging - 9to5Mac

With the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple announced that they’ll be capable of charging even faster than previous iPhone models: up to 50% in just 20 minutes. While that is true, it’s thanks to a brand new USB-PD specification, which isn’t widely available on the market yet.In short, you’ll need to buy Apple’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter if you want to charge your iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max as quickly as possible, at least for now.

This is because Apple’s charging brick is seemingly the only option on the market that supports this new USB-PD 3.2 SPR AVS specification.Of course, it’s likely only a matter of time before there’s third party options on the market. It’s not like Apple is using a proprietary specification – it’s just a brand new one.

Apple sells its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter for $39, which isn’t completely insane, though it is pretty high up there.iPhone 17 pre-orders opened yesterday. All of the new iPhone models, Apple Watches, and new AirPods Pro 3 will be available to customers next Friday, September 19th.

Accessories like this new Dynamic Power Adapter are already available in Apple Stores for customers. You can also pick them up on Amazon.Other fast chargers on the market, like Anker’s affordable 45W Nano charger, will also fast charge the iPhone 17 Pro, just not as rapidly.

You’ll gain roughly 50% in 30 minutes, rather than 20 minutes. On the plus side, Anker’s comes in at two-thirds of the cost and includes a 6ft USB-C cable.Pre-order the latest Apple products on Amazon: AirPods Pro 3 – $249 Apple Watch SE 3 (40mm) – $249 Apple Watch SE 3 (44mm) – $279 Apple Watch Series 11 (42mm) – $399 Apple Watch Series 11 (46mm) – $429 Apple Watch Ultra 3 – $799 You’re reading 9to5Mac — experts who break news about Apple and its surrounding ecosystem, day after day.
