When I was doing my Master’s degree, I needed a cheap, small laptop that could fit in my motorcycle backpack and have enough battery power to get through about four or five hours of daily lectures.I ended up getting a used netbook for $50, but it came with a horrible custom distro of Linux that really didn't let you do anything.I replaced it with Ubuntu Linux, and the little machine with its single-core Intel Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM (upgraded from 512MB!) turned into a powerful little computer that ran office software, browsed the web, took notes, and worked as a perfect presentation machine.
Today, Ubuntu would crush that same computer.Ubuntu has moved with the times, and its minimum requirements are similar to Windows.So, if you have an old, underpowered computer that used to run Ubuntu well, you'll want to switch to one of these alternatives to give it a fresh lease on life.
Puppy Linux The fastest way to make an old PC feel useful again Let's kick off with the Linux distribution you'll probably want if you're running something old and slow.Puppy Linux comes in a variety of flavors, but in general takes up around 1-1.5GB of space.The OS is designed to load entirely into RAM, so it doesn't matter if your computer has a slow hard drive or old SSD.
Obviously, it's not a looker by any means, but Puppy Linux does come with a set of bundled apps that should cover most basic needs.Since there are different varieties of Puppy Linux, the exact software bundle differs.However, at the very least, you'll get a web browser, a word processor, a spreadsheet, image editor, and a media player.

This Linux distro swaps out the resource-hungry core components that most mainstream distros use, and gains significant memory and CPU load reduction as a result.The main tradeoff is an OS that looks less modern, but hey, maybe you should think of it as looking era-appropriate for the kinds of computers you'll most likely run it on.
Linux Lite A beginner-friendly replacement for Windows The name of Linux Lite almost tells you everything you need to know.Just like the other distros on this list, Linux Lite is designed to be light on system resources.However, terms like "user-friendly" and "familiar interface" in the marketing material allude to the fact that this distro is aimed at folks coming over from Windows.
If you have an older computer that used to run some version of Windows and doesn't meet the requirements to run something like Zorin OS, then Linux Lite could be just the ticket.It's not quite as light and barebones as some of the others on this list, but if your old computer was designed to run Windows 10, it's probably going to do just fine with Linux Lite.Bodhi Linux Minimal by design This is an ascetic take on Linux.

Remember that Linux is "free" as in "freedom," and using whatever computer hardware you want with as little or as much Linux OS as you want is about as free as it gets.
