Your Fitbit app just got a long-overdue look but bigger update is coming soon

Fitbit has been through the wars of late with its 2021 acquisition by Google leading to the slowing down of product releases and even the admission last year that there won’t be any more Fitbit smartwatches.Add to that reports of software bugs that last for months and you might assume that Fitbit was dead and buried. But the brand seems to be living on thanks to Google, with recent updates to the Fitbit Charge 6, Inspire 3, Versa 4 and Sense 2 bringing new, if minor, fixes and features.Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT Read more: Your Fitbit just got a free update that improves one of its best features Read more: Fitbit just gave four of its trackers a free update - see if yours will get it Google also uses the Fitbit app as the fitness app of choice for its Pixel Watch smartwatches, giving new life to the platform.

Though you’ll set up any Pixel Watch with the Pixel Watch app, you need to link your wearable to the Fitbit app to track any fitness and health metrics.Over the past few months, Google has slowly been completely redesigning the Fitbit app, changing the look and feel to bring it in line with the Pixel phones’ version of Android. There’s more white space and green lines, but it does feel more modern than the old version.Despite the upheaval, the Fitbit app has only just got a feature you might have expected it always had, but is only getting now, in 2025, for the first time.As spotted by TechRadar, the Fitbit app is finally getting a dark mode.Given Android and the iPhone have both offered system-wide dark mode options since 2019, that’s a very long time to wait for Fitbit to offer it.Fitbit introduce their brand new Charge 4 device When switching your phone to dark mode, which gives menus and apps dark or black backgrounds with white text instead of the inverse, many apps now automatically change to reflect the look.

But Fitbit has remained a sore thumb, still only offering a light version with all-white design. But in version 4.5 of the Fitbit app for Android, you can at long last select a dark theme in the app’s settings. It might sound like a small thing (OK, fine, it is a small thing), but if you’re picky about how your phone looks and love dark mode, having the Fitbit app blind you with its bright white every time you open it might have been annoying. Now you have the choice.Though this update is long overdue, Fitbit is reportedly planning an even bigger overhaul to its app, despite only just overhauling the look.As reported by 9to5Google, the Fitbit app is set for another major redesign that incorporates more AI as well as the look of Material 3 Expressive, the design language Google has dreamt up for Android 16, the latest version.Where the current Fitbit app has Today, Coach and You tabs along the bottom, the next version coming soon will have Today, Health, Sleep and Fitness, and introduce AI generated text based around a new fitness “coach”.

It’s unclear how much of this will be locked behind the £7.99 per month Fitbit Premium subscription.Early shots shown in the 9to5Google report show information-dense screens (with dark mode on!) that look a little hard to decipher. After the simplification of the app’s design, it seems as though Google has decided to turn things on their head again.Reportedly, this new version will start rolling out for Android in preview in October, but will end up replacing the current version later down the line. For now at least we have dark mode.Read Next           SUBSCRIBE Invalid emailWe use your sign-up to provide content in ways you've consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
