Crunchyroll Restructuring Global Operations

Company president outlines plans to expand operations outside the U.S.; new job openings reportedly will outnumber layoffs in a move not based on cost-cutting or ‘driven by financial performance.’
In a memo sent to employees today by company president Rahul Purini, leading anime platform Crunchyroll has begun restructuring designed to shift resources into faster growing markets outside the U.S.According to the company, the restructuring is not based on finances but rather on expanding and planning for additional growth. The company is recruiting and will have more job openings than the number of jobs eliminated through layoffs.

Crunchyroll has more than 1,000 employees; the number of new jobs and layoffs were not revealed. In the memo, Purini noted, “As we look toward the next three to five years, we believe the right path forward is a new organizational model that supports regionally-empowered teams to lean into anime fandom even further… some of our colleagues will be departing the company, some will be expanding their scope, and some will be assigned new roles.” He also noted that the job cuts are “not a cost-cutting measure or driven by financial performance.” Expansion plans include the addition of engineering hubs in the U.S., Mexico and India, and investment in opportunities beyond its core anime streaming business, such as in collectibles, other merchandise, and manga.A digital manga service will launch later this year as part of its subscription offerings.
