Apple is tired of waiting for other people to solve smart homes' biggest problem

Apple is expanding its smart home portfolio beyond speakers and Apple TV 4K.And the company is enlisting two established hardware makers to help. The Apple Home Collection is a lineup of cameras, a video doorbell, a smart lock, and thermostats built in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.

The gadgets aren’t slapped with Apple branding, though—the goal is to make them easier to set up, manage, and work natively with the Home app. What’s included in Apple Home Collection One app, fewer compatibility headaches Close LG Electronics is responsible for most of the Apple Home Collection lineup with a Dual-Camera Video Doorbell, a Floodlight Camera, an Outdoor Cam, an Indoor Cam, and a Smart Deadbolt Lock. All four camera devices record up to 2.5K video and can tell people, pets, vehicles, and packages apart.

The Video Doorbell comes with a built-in spotlight and a chime that can be played through HomePod speakers.Meanwhile, the Floodlight Cam keeps an eye on your home’s surroundings with dual floodlights that switch on when motion is detected. The Indoor Cam adds a privacy twist: it can tilt to look around only when you check in and then angle down to stop monitoring once the first household member walks in.

Camera features require a HomeHub and footage needs iCloud+.LG’s Smart Deadbolt Lock uses ultra-wideband technology to unlock as soon as you walk up with a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch.A PIN pad and tap-to-unlock are there as backups.

Beyond home monitoring, both LG and Schneider Electric are introducing smart thermostats. Both can read temperature and humidity across multiple rooms through their standalone sensors or the sensors built into HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod Mini. They support the Matter smart home standard and work with a range of HVAC systems with simplified installation.

With the on-device intelligence from the iPhone, Adaptive Temperature in Home can adjust the temperature while the house is empty, then prepare the home for your return. The appeal is that Apple’s Home Collection works directly through its Home app. Each device pairs with a single tap from your iPhone, can be controlled with Siri, and you can combine them into automated routines without creating an account or downloading separate apps.

The devices also support Thread, so they help devices stay connected even when the Wi-Fi drops.Apple assures that Home data is end-to-end encrypted and that neither the company nor its partners can access that data. How much does the Apple Home Collection cost? What this means for your smart home LG’s Video Doorbell, Floodlight Cam, Indoor Cam, and Outdoor Cam are priced at $250, $400, $200, and $300, respectively.
