Android trackers have one big problem that Apple solved years ago

Android tracker tags have improved significantly over the past couple of years, but there are still a few areas where AirTag still reigns supreme. The focus is often put on software features, like notifying you when an item is left behind, but I think the real downside is something nobody talks about: their actual physical design.Android trackers come in all shapes and sizes—and that's the problem More choice, more friction Close Unlike the AirTag, Android trackers don't share one universal physical design.

There are dozens of different designs coming from both popular and generic brands. The Moto Tag is a button, the Pixel Tag is a pill, and the Galaxy SmartTag has a wide keychain opening that makes it easy to attach to keys and bags.Whether you describe them as ovals, pucks, clips, pebbles, ellipses, squares, or wallet-friendly cards, there's just so much variety.

For the most part, this variety is useful and even fun.Different shapes, sizes, and colors allow you to pick the most suitable tracker to attach to your backpack, put inside your wallet, or add to your keychain without the added bulk that comes from a case. The problem that comes with this variety is that there isn't a single widely adopted shape that you can pick and then buy accessories for.

If you own a Samsung Galaxy phone and want to use the Galaxy SmartTag to benefit from its unique features and SmartThings integration, you're stuck with the shape. It's a fine shape to attach to your keychain or throw into your backpack, but good luck living with it in your wallet.Okay, maybe you could buy one of those wallets that have a specially shaped cutout for it, like this model from Gaochale, but you'll still have a much smaller pool of accessories to choose from than an AirTag owner.

And if you ever wish to buy a phone from a different brand or switch to a tag that you like better, all those accessories instantly become worthless.I have about a dozen of those ultra-cheap generic trackers with a keychain loop, and while they do their job well enough, I was never able to find a wallet that can fit one.My wife and I have to carry a bulky wallet because of it, and I don't want to buy a semi-functional, overpriced card tracker just to replace a tracker that I already use in my wallet.

The Google Pixel Tag is probably the closest thing we've gotten to a "universal" Android equivalent of the AirTag.Google is behind the Find Hub software that many Android tags rely on, so it would make sense — except it took way too long to come to market. It was released just a couple of months ago, and even if it ends up selling in big numbers (which I doubt it will, given the presence of other brands), it's probably going to take several years before we see a healthy variety of third-party accessories that can fit the Pixel Tag.

Related Android trackers aren't just for keys—here's 5 unique ways I use mine I don't need fewer things to lose; I need more trackers! Posts 4 By  Ismar Hrnjicevic The AirTag's biggest advantage is its massive accessory ecosystem AirTag slots are absolutely everywhere The Apple AirTag has kept the same basic shape of a simple circular button since its original release in 2021, and the second-generation AirTag maintained the same form factor.Since it's been around for years, there's a near-endless sea of different accessories.Apple only sells a few first-party loops and key rings and carries a few partner cases, like the Mophie Loop and Tech21 EvoPop, but there are so many other accessories available on sites like Amazon.

Some of the items you can attach an AirTag to include minimalist metal wallets, backpacks, pet collars, camera straps, adhesive mounts, passport and luggage holders, and outdoor gear.Whatever item you're trying to attach the AirTag to, I bet you can hop on Amazon and find an adapter or accessory that will let you do just that. And thanks to economies of scale, you can often find these accessories easily and for very cheap, especially in places like thrift stores, yard sales, and Facebook Marketplace.

To be clear, this isn't because the AirTag comes in a superior shape; it's because Apple picked one shape and stuck with it long enough to let a rich accessory ecosystem form around it.All this being said, it's worth pointing out that Apple also supports third-party trackers from many of the same brands as Android. But if we're being completely honest, most Apple users are probably going to stick with the Apple ecosystem because it works so well, and that includes the first-party AirTag.

Everything else is more of an afterthought. The Moto Tag proves copying the AirTag was the right call Compatibility sometimes beats originality While most brands that make Android tracking tags opted for a unique shape to make their trackers stand out, Motorola did the smart thing, at least in my opinion. The Moto Tag and Moto Tag 2 have a near-identical physical shape to the Apple AirTag, which also means that the trackers can fit into the vast majority of AirTag accessories.

This forward-thinking move from Motorola, paired with the Moto Tag's frequent sales and freebies when buying Motorola phones, means that Android does have a direct AirTag competitor—and unfortunately for Google, it's not the Pixel Tag.Now, it's worth pointing out that the Moto Tag's design doesn't have the exact same curvature as the AirTag, which means that some rigid, snap-fit plastic cases won't work with the Moto Tag.But most accessories are designed to be pliable to make it easy to attach and remove the tag, so it's not that big of a deal.

I don't mind different tag shapes, but the AirTag shape should be the default Different form factors have legitimate use cases.Tags with integrated keychain loops allow for a less bulky design, and card-style trackers are perfect for wallets with thicker cutouts that can fit them. However, given how vital accessories are to the broader tracker ecosystem, I just wish the general AirTag shape and dimensions were the standard across all brands.

This way, we could all pick the tag we like the most without losing out on all the cool accessories that the AirTag has helped popularize.
