Payments processor Stripe has published new documentation for developers looking to accept out-of-app payments for digital goods and subscriptions on iPhone and iPad.The move follows a court ruling that bars Apple from preventing developers from directing users to web-based payment options from within their apps.Stripe charges a standard 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction — significantly lower than Apple’s 15–30% commission on in-app purchases.
The key tradeoff is that Apple’s in-app purchase system provides a native interface, and Apple handles subscription management and payment security on the developer’s behalf.By contrast, integrating Stripe requires more development effort and shifts more responsibility to the app maker — such as managing the checkout flow, handling subscriptions, and ensuring compliance. However, Stripe offers greater flexibility, broader payment options, and developer control.
While Apple’s in-app purchases are more seamless within the iOS ecosystem, Stripe has demonstrated that it can deliver a smooth experience as well, with support for Apple Pay, subscriptions, and even Apple Pay’s buy now, pay later features.Developers can find Stripe’s newly released documentation here, and a video that showcases how apps can now integrate external payment methods effectively below: Do more with your iPhone USB-C charger MagSafe battery Wireless CarPlay adapter Craft for iPhone, iPad, Mac Fantastical + Cardhop Follow Zac Hall: X | Threads | Instagram | Mastodon You’re reading 9to5Mac — experts who break news about Apple and its surrounding ecosystem, day after day.Be sure to check out our homepage for all the latest news, and follow 9to5Mac on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to stay in the loop.
