3 top Netflix movies to watch this week (March 16 - 22)

Who remembers walking up and down the aisles of DVDs and (gulp) VHS tapes at Blockbuster on Friday night looking for something good to watch? I mean, I don't either; I was just testing to see if did. With its rows and rows of movies and shows to watch, Netflix can feel like that, too, sometimes.Well, since I've been around the, er, Block, let me help.

For this weekend, March 16 to 22, I've put a few movies in my basket for you—a modern masterpiece of kaiju destruction, a fast-paced imagining of what making the first-ever SNL was like, and a hilariously awkward mockumentary of small-town theater.3 Godzilla Minus One A monster movie institution reborn, with surprising emotional depth Fingers crossed you have a decent-sized TV or projector screen on your home theater setup for this absolute beast of a visual effects monster movie (it even won the Oscar for the category). And while, yes, definitely lives up to its giant radioactive lizard, city-stomping, screaming-monster roots that were planted back in 1954, writer-director Takashi Yamazaki remembered that all that destruction means way more when people and emotions are caught in the middle of it.

With a story that is part of the official Godzilla canon and lore, has its own self-contained continuity.Set in post-war Japan, it tells the story of Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a disgraced kamikaze pilot whose cowardice prevented him from taking a shot at the monster the first time. When Godzilla returns years later, Koichi must face his cowardice and redeem himself in the eyes of his sweetie Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe) and their newly adopted daughter.

Koichi teams up with ex-weapons engineer Kenji Noda, and former Navy mechanic Sosaku Tachibana to battle the monster head-on in one of the coolest boat battle sequences ever.is epic in its scope, the monster itself is spectacular, and the old-school Godzilla vibes of the film make it a great watch. If you want a more authentic old-school experience, though, be sure to check out the black and white version.
