Apple Maps is hiding iOS 26s most useful new feature - 9to5Mac

Apple Maps is full of updates as part of iOS 26, including a new Liquid Glass design and Preferred Routes proactive feature.Another notable new feature is Visited Places. Here’s how it works… Apple Maps Visited Places in iOS 26 Apple describes Visited Places as a way to “help users remember the places they’ve been.” The feature is completely opt-in.

When you open Apple Maps for the first time after installing iOS 26, you can choose to enable Visited Places. All data collected as part of the feature is protected with end-to-end encryption and can’t be accessed by Apple. That’s an important feature for something designed to keep track of where you go.

Apple says: You can find Visited Places by opening the Apple Maps app, tapping your profile picture, tapping “Places,” then choose “Visited Places.” Here, you can see a breakdown of places you’ve visited by category and city, as well as a full list of all visits. You also have fine-grained control over all the visits, as well as the ability to save a place to a guide, share it, add a note, rate the place, and remove it from your history.Additionally, if Apple Maps isn’t quite sure the place you visited, you can tap the “Wrong Location” button and Apple Maps will show you a list of other nearby businesses to help you correct it.

Of note, Apple does say that Visited Places is still a “beta” feature. This means you might encounter some bugs and glitches as you use it, but Apple will continue to refine it as time progresses. It also appears to only be available in the United States for now.

I’ve already found the new Visited Places feature to be incredibly useful in my first month with iOS 26.What excites me most, however, is how it will only get more useful as your library of places continues to grow. For example, I’m headed to Chicago next month.

I’m glad that Apple Maps will keep a log of places I go while in town, so the next time I’m there I can look back at the restaurants, bars, parks, and more that I visited.Last year, I went to New York City a couple of times. On the second trip, I wanted to make sure I went back to the bagel place I had gone on the previous trip, but I couldn’t remember the name.

My solution was to pull up my American Express statement and hunt down the name. That type of digging won’t be necessary anymore thanks to Visited Places in Apple Maps. The Visited Places feature in iOS 26 is an example of Apple at its best.

It integrates deeply with your iPhone, keeps your data secure, and works in the background. You never have to think about it, but it’s there to help you when you need it.Have you tried Visited Places in Apple Maps with iOS 26? What do you think of it? Let us know down in the comments.
