A new episode of the Adult Swim SMALLS series is set to premiere on October 31.A special livestream of the episode will include a compilation of previously released shorts and a live chat with animation director Sarah Schmidt alongside other voiceover cast members.
The series has garnered over 1.6 million views on YouTube since its first episode premiered in May 2023.You can view every released SMALLS video here.In the new installment “The Ghost,” Lulu the dog and the Gassy’s Gas ‘N Stuff crew learn about a mysterious ghost that haunts the station while they’re clearing up the walk-in freezer. Enjoy the previous 2 episodes: Schmidt shared with AWN her inspiration for the series came from her family owning a gas station when she was a young kid. “After years of helping out in the back room doing oddball jobs for mom and dad, I ended up working up front on payroll,” she says.
“The place was off the beaten path of a few state routes - some might call that middle of nowhere, but plenty of others happily call that home. There was a constant cast of characters, including regulars as well as out-of-towners who had never used a gas pump that had old, physical, rolling numbers instead of a digital screen. The series is inspired by the countless stories that surfaced from all of those people out there, as well as all of the people working jobs like that all over the country, helping people get where they are going.” She went to note how she wanted her work to capture that overstimulating feeling working at a gas station with so much product placement, packaging and the “pushing of usually not-very-good-for-you snacks and vices.
“I try to prioritize setting up keyframe poses so I can kinda have an indulgent, entertaining time doing in-between drawings,” Schmidt explains.“As a Nickelodeon kid, I gravitated most toward every Klasky-Csupo show, , and .I felt all of those shows had more freedom to tell both chaotic as well as down-to-earth stories because of how wild their character designs looked.
When I took animation classes at Columbus College of Art & Design, we used Toon Boom Harmony, but I moved into Flash because my friend Patrick Kain used it, and he had just spent a summer working on ... the style and pacing of that show had a big influence on me.All the FoxADHD shorts coming out at the time were using Flash, too, so I realized if I wanted to get with the program, I had better get comfortable in there.Nowadays I realize that Adobe Animate must be so comforting for me because I watched and played a ton of Neopets.com growing up, which both featured a lot of Flash-player animation.”
