, a new animated short film directed by Lauren Lola and editor/co-director Darrick Lazo, currently in pre-production, is seeking additional funding through its Seed&Spark campaign.The initial fundraising ends November 6 at 3 pm.
Set after the 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, follows Rhea, a multiracial Filipino American woman and practitioner of the Filipino martial art of escrima.As Rhea struggles with her identity within both the Asian American community and the white household she grew up in, a new anti-Asian hate crime breaks out on her train ride home.With only her escrima sticks at hand and her personal history at stake, she must decide how to respond.
“It’s been almost five years since the Atlanta spa shootings,” commented a spokesperson for the Seed&Spark campaign.“What have we learned since then? How do we address anti-Asian hate — specifically for those who’re Southeast Asian and/or mixed-race?” The film blends stylized animation with martial-arts drama.George Nelson serves as animator.
The campaign goal stands at $15,000, which will cover costs such as animator fees, cast, crew, previsualization, and festival submissions.Supporters of the campaign are offered a tiered set of incentives, from digital thank-you cards to a Filipino martial-arts tutorial and a cameo in the film.is slated for submission to the festival circuit in 2026.
