The 5.3-liter V8 has been a defining aspect of the Silverado 1500 lineup since 1999.For more than two decades, it’s been the engine many Chevy truck buyers and enthusiasts have gravitated to, as it provides the right balance of power and fuel economy. However, for better or worse, the 2027 Silverado will not continue that trend.
GM is retiring the 5.3 and 6.2-liter engines in favor of a 5.7 and a 6.6-liter V8 for the 2027 Silverado, both built on a refreshed version of the GM Small Block engine design the company has used since the 1950s.That decision puts Chevrolet at odds with others in the truck market.Ford still offers a 5.0-liter V8 in the best-selling F-150, but most of its lineup is centered on the turbocharged EcoBoost V6 or the PowerBoost hybrid.
Toyota also dropped the V8 from the third-generation Tundra in favor of a turbocharged hybrid system it calls i-FORCE MAX.Chevrolet, however, is betting truck buyers still want a V8 that breathes on its own, not one boosted by turbos or electric motors.Nissan made a similar bet in the midsize segment by keeping the naturally aspirated V6 in the Frontier while the Tacoma, Colorado, and Ranger all moved to turbocharged four-cylinders.
"Proven to perform in the real world" Duramax now more accessible for fleets As noted a moment ago, the new Silverado engines share their basic architecture with GM's latest generation of Small Block V8 powerplants.Keeping a naturally aspirated engine family like this in the Silverado lineup demonstrates how much Chevy is leaning on classic V8 power to sell trucks.Chevrolet has not released horsepower or torque figures for the new 5.7 and 6.6-liter engines (towing, payload, and fuel economy numbers are forthcoming as well).
Those figures are expected closer to the truck's on-sale date, which Chevrolet has set for the end of 2026.There is no way yet to compare the new engines against the outgoing 5.3 and 6.2-liter on paper, though it is reasonable to expect more power, better fuel economy, and greater overall capability.“We pushed these engines through an extensive testing and validation process to make sure they deliver the durability, capability, and dependability Silverado customers expect,” said Mark Dickens, Chevrolet executive chief engineer.
“From tough towing scenarios to the daily demands our customers put on their trucks, these next-generation V8s were engineered and proven to perform in the real world.” As for the rest of the powertrain lineup, buyers can expect a few notable changes. The 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder swaps its eight-speed automatic for a 10-speed, which is likely to increase the Silverado's fuel efficiency. The 3.0-liter Duramax, a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel, will now be available on the base Work Truck model, a benefit for fleet operators who previously had to step up to a higher trim for the diesel.

At the top sits the High Country, the trim Chevrolet has used since 2014 to give the Silverado a Denali-style look, set apart from the rest of the lineup with extra chrome, brightwork, and a more luxurious cabin.High Country models for 2027 receive a full panoramic sunroof, a first for the Silverado lineup, along with 22-inch wheels and a satin-finished grille.Real wood trim and suede-like seating are available across two interior color themes, one lighter and one darker.
At the other end of the lineup, the ZR2 and Trail Boss trade chrome for traction.ZR2 sits at the top of that group, riding on 35-inch mud-terrain tires with a two-inch suspension lift.Front and rear locking differentials, often called E-lockers, force the two wheels on each axle to spin at the same speed, so one wheel cannot lose traction and spin uselessly while the other sits still in mud or on rocks.
Multimatic shocks, tuned for off-road racing, work alongside jounce dampers that soften hits when the suspension reaches the end of its travel.Inside, the ZR2 features real carbon-fiber accents, marking the first time Chevrolet has brought this lightweight, race-inspired material to the Silverado cabin.Buyers can also choose a Bison Edition, built with American Expedition Vehicles, which adds unique front and rear bumpers, underbody skid plates, and 18-inch wheels that can run at a lower tire pressure without losing their seal.
By contrast, the Trail Boss is for buyers who want the off-road look and a fair amount of capability without paying ZR2 prices. It gets 34-inch tires and the same two-inch lift, plus two interior options with red-edged seat belts and a distinct seat pattern.Related I ran a dealership express lube—these 4 services help your car last 200,000 miles With new car prices at an all-time high, I’ve resolved to keep my current vehicle as long as possible.
