YouTube Premium's best discovery feature isn't enabled by default, here's where to find it

YouTube is the streaming platform I use the most, both as part of my job and just for my own entertainment and education. It's the one streaming service I could never cancel, which is why I'm always surprised that people are so reluctant to pay for it.After all, the time you save just by removing all ads is worth far more than the asking price.

However, removing advertising is only one small part of the total package.Maybe one reason people are less likely to pay for YouTube Premium is that they aren't really aware of everything they're getting. For example, did you know you get access to enhanced bitrate videos? Don't knock it until you try it! Which brings me to a feature that's sadly overlooked — Smart Downloads.

Most YouTube Premium subscribers never turn this feature on But it's not like they're pushing the option You probably already know that YouTube Premium allows you to download videos onto a device to watch later. It's the perfect solution when you know you're going to have no internet, such as on the subway or when you're at school or work and the Wi-Fi is spotty or (more likely) YouTube has been blocked by the network administrators. So you queue up downloads for videos, and later when you have the time, you can watch them whether you have an internet connection or not.

But that's not the only way to get YouTube videos stored locally. There's a feature called Smart Downloads exclusive to YouTube Premium. This feature is not turned on by default, and unless you go digging a few levels into the app menus, you'll never see it pushed or advertised.

Which is why you likely didn't even know it was a thing.Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Brand Samsung SoC Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Get the new Galaxy S26 Ultra with AI smarts and an all-new privacy display. It's big, powerful, packed with AI, and you'll love the S-Pen stylus.  Display 6.9-inch Dynamic Super AMOLED 2X RAM 12 or 16 GB Storage 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB Battery 5,000 mAh Operating System Android Front camera 12MP f/2.2 Rear camera 200MP f/1.4 main, 50MP f/1.9 ultrawide, 10MP f/2.4 telephoto, 50MP f/2.9 telephoto Dimensions 163.6 x 78.1 x 7.9 mm (6.44 x 3.07 x 0.31 in) Colors Violet, Sky Blue, Black, White, Silver Shadow, Pink Gold Weight 214g Charge speed 60W wired Super Fast Charging, 25W wireless Stylus S-Pen $1050 at Amazon Expand Collapse What smart downloads actually does Anticipating your needs before you do Manual downloading is only useful if you know ahead of time that you need access to offline videos.

So it means looking through your feed or Watch Later saved list and tagging everything you want to download. That's all well and good, but what if you unexpectedly have no internet? This happened to me recently as my town was hit by severe storms that knocked out the power and internet for hours.Luckily, my Smart Downloads feature on YouTube had already downloaded videos I could watch based on what YouTube thinks I'm likely to watch next.

Smart Downloads is basically like YouTube Recommendations, except it pre-emptively downloads the videos it recommends so you can watch them immediately without having to stream them. What's particularly clever is that the downloaded content isn't permanent. As you watch videos or your interests shift, YouTube removes older downloads and replaces them with fresh recommendations.

The library essentially refreshes itself without requiring any input from you.You can tweak the experience, and we'll get to that, but you can also be completely hands-off.Why it’s secretly one of YouTube Premium’s best features Why doesn't YouTube talk about it more? The biggest value-add of Smart Downloads for me is that it changes YouTube downloads from something you have to plan for to something that's ready when you need it.

It means that if I ever get into a situation where my phone has no internet and I don't have any way to pass the time, there's usually a decent range of videos waiting for me to watch. While YouTube doesn't always get it right, I've found that, on average, the videos it downloads to my phone are ones that I would have watched anyway. How well it works for you depends on what you've been feeding the all-powerful algorithm.

If you're using a YouTube profile that's shared with other people or your kids, your downloads folder will be as messy as your recommendations feed. While I can't prove it 100%, I also feel like it's worth checking out my Smart Downloads list in addition to my regular YouTube feed, because there's often some content in there from new creators that isn't showing up in my main feed.I don't know if it's just a quirk, but I actually like having a source of recommendations that are slightly different.

Here’s where to find and enable smart downloads Activating this feature is easy.I'm using the Android version of the YouTube app here, but it's more or less the same process on every platform.Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.

Open Settings by tapping on the cog icon.Select Background and downloads.Toggle Smart Downloads on.

You should start downloading videos right away.If you want to delete a video, just tap the three dots next to it and choose to remove it.You can customize how much storage it uses YouTube automatically sets how much storage it will use for Smart Downloads and at what quality they'll be downloaded, but you can customize this to better fit your phone.

In my case, since I have a phone with a 1440p screen and plenty of storage, I prefer to have higher-quality videos and don't mind giving a decent chunk of my storage for that purpose.Deals Save on phones and mobile deals for offline-ready use Explore deals and discounts on phones and mobile gear to boost offline viewing.Save on unlocked phones, extra storage (SD cards, flash drives), power banks, chargers, protective cases and mobile data plans—everything to make Smart Downloads and offline p Deals Explore Phones & Mobile Deals Under "Background and downloads," you can tweak things using the "Adjust Smart Downloads" option.
