company XLSMART has completed a public cloud migration to Tencent Cloud, moving core systems and business assets onto the platform. The project took four and a half months.XLSMART said the migration covered more than 60 core applications, 1,200 microservices, 1,100 APIs, 900 business interfaces, and more than 15TB of core assets. The companies said the migration was completed without downtime while XLSMART continued serving more than 69 million users.DataReportal, citing GSMA Intelligence, said Indonesia had 356 million cellular mobile connections at the beginning of 2025.The figure can exceed the total population because individuals may use more than one mobile connection.Post-merger cloud consolidationThe migration followed the creation of XLSMART through the April 2025 merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren.
Before the project, its systems were spread across fragmented multi-cloud platforms. The merger brought together separate telecom IT environments, including applications, vendor-linked systems, APIs, and business interfaces under XLSMART.The integration work involved systems from more than 10 third-party vendors.According to the companies, more than 70% of the target applications had to be redesigned or rebuilt, rather than moved through a standard lift-and-shift migration. The companies also carried out an architectural audit before the migration. The process was used to decide which workloads should be retained, modified, or optimised before being moved to Tencent Cloud. The migration involved 1,200 microservices and 1,100 APIs across XLSMART’s operations.AI used in migration workXLSMART said Tencent’s AI agents were used across the migration process to shorten manual work.
According to the company, tasks that would usually take months were completed within weeks or days.Tencent Cloud said the AI-assisted process covered service discovery, architecture design, environment deployment, migration cutover, and monitoring. The cloud provider used tools including CodeBuddy, WorkBuddy, and TokenHub as part of the migration process.Tencent Cloud said the AI-assisted work automated parts of cross-account environment scanning, legacy resource mapping, low-level design documentation, and architecture diagram generation. The company said this reduced manual spreadsheet-based tracking. The project also included the deployment of more than 20 Tencent Cloud products, including databases, containers, security services, and intelligent advisors.
Tencent Cloud also introduced Database Claw to support database operations through agent-based automation.Yessie D.Yosetya, director and chief information and technology officer of XLSMART, said the project was intended to strengthen the company’s digital foundation and operational resilience.Poshu Yeung, senior vice-president of Tencent Cloud and head of Tencent Cloud International, said the AI migration capabilities developed during the XLSMART project have been consolidated into a reusable platform for enterprise customers.Tencent’s Indonesia cloud footprintTencent Cloud operates in more than 80 markets and regions. In Indonesia, the company has multiple availability zones in Jakarta.Tencent is also expanding its cloud infrastructure in Indonesia.
reported that Tencent planned to invest US$500 million by 2030 to support cloud and AI services in the country, and that the company already had two data centres in Jakarta.GoTo Group said in November 2024 that Tencent Cloud was establishing a third Internet Data Centre in Indonesia as part of a commitment worth around US$500 million in infrastructure, resources, and investment by 2030.reported in June last year that a DayOne-INA data centre campus in Batam would provide about 72MW of capacity, or roughly 5% of Indonesia’s projected 1.41GW data centre capacity by 2029.Tencent Cloud’s customers in Indonesia include GoTo Group, the ride-hailing and delivery company, which has also carried out a multi-year cloud migration project with the provider.XLSMART is jointly owned by Indonesia’s Sinarmas Group and Malaysia’s Axiata Group.See also: Vodafone tests AWS cloud infrastructure for IoT network servicesWant to learn more about Cloud Computing from industry leaders?
