Home Assistant 2026.9 update is out today.And it aims to solve the everyday guesswork that comes with running a smart home.The latest release answers questions like why an automation fired, which entities need your attention, or seeing how Matter devices are connected.
The September update also has several other changes that make the open-source home automation platform more polished.Home Assistant gets better at showing you what’s happening Smarter alerts and long-overdue answer to ‘Why’ Close Home Assistant’s built-in security dashboard is getting two additions with version 2026.9.An Active alerts section now appears when something genuinely needs your attention.
You get to decide which entities can trigger an alert and select the level of severity as Alert or Warning.So, a door left open doesn’t get treated with the same urgency as a smoke alarm going off.This way, the section disappears entirely when everything is working fine.
The second addition inside the security dashboard is a new Favorites section.It lets you keep your frequently checked sensors, doors, locks, and other devices at the top of the dashboard so they’re never buried, and you don’t have to hunt for them.Another noteworthy feature with this update makes the Activity log more useful.
Previously, you could see what changed but not why it changed.This meant guessing which automation or event was responsible for triggering it and then digging through the traces manually.Now, each Activity entry opens a detailed view laying out the chain of events, so when something gets triggered unexpectedly, you can see which automation or script was involved.
Along with this, History and Activity also get a Sources pane to filter across both views by entity type or integration.Meanwhile, Tile Cards get three new control options—a light effect selection for compatible lights, fan-speed control for vacuums, and expanded target humidity for climate entities.Matter and Modbus devices are easier to manage A less intimidating experience Home Assistant is making it easier to set up Modbus devices like solar inverters, heat pumps, and energy meters.
Previously, it meant manually configuring registers in YAML, which can be quite technical for beginners.In the 2026.9 update, integrations that understand how a device communicates with Modbus can now build that configuration through the UI instead of doing it yourself.If you use any Matter-enabled devices, this update makes it easier to see how everything is connected.
