CrossOver on Linux and Mac can now play more Windows games

CrossOver, the Windows app compatibility layer for Linux and Mac, just got a massive upgrade.The latest update is now based on Wine 11, allowing , , , and other games to finally work on Mac.CrossOver uses the open-source Wine project as a foundation, and it shares some development efforts with Valve's Proton layer on Linux.

However, it adds a different management interface on top of Wine's codebase, with pre-made containers for popular apps and games.It's an easier way to run Windows apps than a barebones Wine installation, and a great option for Windows gaming—especially on Mac, which still doesn't have Proton in Steam.The main upgrade in CrossOver 26 is that it's now based on Wine 11, which was initially released in January.

That includes over 6,000 code changes that improved software compatibility and performance, and integration with the NTSYNC module in the Linux kernel, which further speeds up Windows software on Linux desktops.Don't get that mixed up with NSYNC.This update also includes D3DMetal 3.0, DXMT v0.72, Wine Mono 10.4.1, and vkd3d 1.18, which are responsible for graphics rendering and .NET framework software compatibility.

D3DMetal is the Apple-developed solution for running DirectX games on macOS, and the version in CrossOver 26 appears to be the same one from the Game Porting Toolkit 3.The end result is that many more games are now playable on Mac, including Bethesda's open-world , the simulation game, and the shooters and .The full list from CodeWeavers' blog post is below.
