We're getting to the point in October where it's perfectly reasonable to put the tombstones, skeletons, and giant spiders on the lawn in anticipation of Halloween. But if you're like me, you'll still want a couple of comedies on your pre-spooky season movie night list to keep things light before all the horror arrives. With that in mind, this week's list of Paramount+ movies for U.S.
subscribers is well-balanced—it's big on laughs but still has some spooky intrigue. It starts with an iconic teen booze run gone sideways, veers dark with a masked man plotting to blow up Parliament, and then finishes strong with my top pick, a workplace revolt comedy with the most famous red stapler in history.3 Superbad The raunchy teen comedy that gave us McLovin I really wish they made more R-rated comedies like .
Every generation needs one to claim as its own—they deliver the moments, the lines, and the over-the-top laughs that feed the inside jokes of friend groups everywhere.Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's hit the Millennial nail hard on the head while still managing to crack everyone else up, too.The raunchy 2007 coming-of-age comedy follows best friends Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera)—obviously named after the two writers—who are about to graduate from high school and go their separate ways for college, when Seth's crush, Jules (Emma Stone in her first movie), invites him to her party.
To impress her, Seth shoulders the burden of somehow getting the booze, a task that then falls on the nerdy and incredibly inept Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and his mind-bogglingly stupid fake ID that bears the single name "McLovin." A liquor store robbery splits the group of boys up, with Fogell embarking on the night of his life in a ride-along with a pair of the coolest cops ever (played by Rogen and Bill Hader), and Evan and Seth fighting all kinds of obstacles to deliver the beverages to the party. It's one of the best teen comedies ever, and it has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.Superbad R Comedy Release Date August 17, 2007 Where to watch Close WHERE TO WATCH Streaming RENT BUY Cast Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader, Seth Rogen, Martha MacIsaac, Emma Stone, Aviva Baumann, Joe Lo Truglio, Kevin Corrigan, Clement Blake, Erica Vittina Phillips, Joe Nuñez, Dave Franco, Marcella Lentz-Pope, Scott Gerbacia, Laura Seay, Roger Iwami, Clint Mabry, Stacy Edwards, Mark Rogen, Charlie Hartsock, Dona Hardy, Charley Rossman, Carla Gallo Runtime 113 minutes Director Greg Mottola Writers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg Producers Judd Apatow, Shauna Robertson, Dara Weintraub Budget $20 million Studio(s) Sony Distributor(s) Sony Executive Producer(s) Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen Powered by Expand Collapse 2 V for Vendetta Hugo Weaving steals the show without showing his face The creepy, grinning Guy Fawkes mask worn by 's antihero became a real-world protest symbol that was adopted by the hacktivist group/movement Anonymous and Occupy Wall Street protesters—pretty powerful stuff.
