Android finally gets a controller feature mobile gamers have been begging for

One aspect of mobile gaming that has consistently lagged behind is controller support that actually works the way you want it to.It’s a maddening experience to find out that jump is on X, dodge is mapped to the wrong trigger, or when the game doesn’t let you change any of it.Fortunately, Google is finally addressing this pain point in Android 17 Beta 2, and it works exactly the way mobile gamers have wanted it.

A small feature that solves a big problem System-wide, not per-game Mishaal Rahman, Community Engagement Manager at Android, announced in a Reddit post that controller remapping lives inside a dedicated Game Controller settings menu.It is accessible through two different paths; wired gamepads can find it in Settings > System > Game Controller. Those with Bluetooth gamepads can head to Settings > Connected Devices, tap into your gamepad’s device details, and look for Game Controller settings from there.

Once inside, the remapping options go fairly deep. You can reassign face buttons, triggers, thumbstick clicks, and swap directional inputs like D-Pad and analog sticks based on your preferences.Everything is saved on the device, meaning that once you set up your ideal layout, you won’t need to redo it every time you reconnect the controller.

The remapping applies across the entire Android system, so you won’t need to replicate controller preferences. That’s a real win here because changing the game controls was always left to game engines and developers, creating an inconsistent experience as every new title was a fresh headache.Designed around how you actually play Still in beta, but promising Android 17 Beta 2’s controller remapping functionality has a practical benefit—if you use console controllers for smartphones and switch between platforms, then differences in button layouts can throw you off.

The feature aims to remove that friction by letting you align controls with what you’re already used to.And being able to adjust that without touching the game’s own settings is a meaningful improvement for casual and hardcore gamers alike.Controller remapping is currently rolling out via Android 17 Beta 2 on eligible Google Pixel phones as well as some non-Pixel devices enrolled in the Android Beta program.

The stable version is expected to be released sometime later this year.As is the case with beta versions, the feature comes with some rough edges.Google is collecting feedback before the feature makes its way to a stable build.
