Android Auto's Gemini update reads your Gmail so you can keep your eyes on the road

Your car will soon know more about you.Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence in Gemini to both Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, giving your ride details that can save you time.As on your Android phone, the new feature connects Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Maps to give Gemini context you don't have to provide yourself, even if you ask multiple questions.

You can ask about your flight status and gate while you're driving to the airport, or ask to go to an appointment without having to explicitly say where you're going.Gemini can also use its image recognition to recognize a location in Google Photos and take you there. If you ask the AI to find restaurants and other stops, it can choose ones that reflect your tastes.

Google maintains that privacy is crucial in the Android Auto and Google built-in updates. You can disconnect Google apps whenever you like, and vehicles with Google built-in will only deliver those personalized answers while your phone is connected. You won't share anything you didn't already approve, in other words.

When will Gemini Personal Intelligence come to Android Auto? The technology is usable by adults in most countries, although it excludes the U.K., the European Economic Area, Nigeria, and Switzerland. The European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires that "gatekeepers" like Google open their AI systems to third parties, including access to personal data, in a bid to foster more competition.Google and Apple both object to the regulation over claims that it could expose sensitive info from Gemini, Siri AI, and similar technologies to bad actors.

The U.K., Nigeria, and Switzerland have similar legislation. If Personal Intelligence is available where you live, it's potentially both faster and safer. You won't have to check your phone before you start driving.
