Linux has never been short of ambitious projects.Some became major parts of the ecosystem, while others disappeared after only a few years.What makes some of them worth remembering is not simply that they were popular.

They represented ideas that made Linux feel experimental, unusual, and genuinely exciting.Some of these projects tried to reinvent the desktop.Others attempted to turn Linux into a serious mobile platform or make commercial gaming a permanent part of the Linux ecosystem.

It was associated with projects such as Foresight Linux and attempted to provide a more sophisticated model for tracking software and updates.This is exactly the sort of Linux project that can disappear without most users noticing.Package managers are infrastructure, so people tend to remember them only when something breaks.

I still find Conary fascinating because it demonstrates how many competing ideas Linux once had for something as fundamental as installing and updating software.The package-management ecosystem that exists today was not inevitable.It emerged from decades of experimentation.

Compiz When the Linux desktop was allowed to be ridiculous Compiz is probably the project on this list I miss because it was just fun even though its forks are still around.Modern desktop environments are generally designed around productivity, consistency, and restraint, but in Compiz windows could wobble, desktop cubes could rotate, and the most fun windows could burn away when closed.A lot of these effects were completely unnecessary.
