UniFi has just revealed its new indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi access point, the U7 Mesh.It could be a great option for extending your network across yards and other large outdoor areas, though it has at least one glaring omission. The new UniFi U7 Mesh isn’t a router or Wi-Fi base station, it’s just a mesh point for an existing UniFi router and network.
It’s primarily designed for “demanding, long-range deployments,” like connecting different buildings in a campus. For home use, it could come in handy for extending Wi-Fi networks across large yards, especially for detached sheds or garages that might contain Wi-Fi devices.UniFi said in a blog post, “The new U7 Mesh keeps its compact footprint while introducing a completely redesigned internal architecture.
Installation is faster, cleaner, and more secure thanks to an upgraded mounting system that improves both stability and weather resistance. It is purpose built for real world conditions, whether mounted indoors or exposed to the elements.” The U7 Mesh supports both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and Wi-FI 7, with a hybrid antenna design that supports both omni and directional signals. The precision long range directional beam can help establish a strong connection with other routers or mesh nodes, delivering “up to three times extended reach in mesh scenarios.” Best of all, the U7 is fairly compact at just 1.9 x 6.3 inches (48.5 x 159.5 millimeters).
That’s thinner than a typical soda can, and it comes with mounting hardware for walls, poles, and tables.Power is supplied with Power over Ethernet (PoE).The router also supports UniFi’s advanced analytics and RF Intelligence Engine, so you can see detailed wireless spectrum information and make changes if needed.

However, if you end up repurposing a U7 Mesh for indoor environments, that will be a disadvantage compared to UniFi’s other mesh access points.Subscribe to our newsletter for Wi-Fi gear coverage Want deeper coverage on Wi-Fi gear like the UniFi U7 Mesh? You do need an existing UniFi router as a base station, though.Source: UniFi
