Forget the Galaxy S26 - I tried something far more exciting from Samsung

Having tested all of the latest and greatest smartphones, it's rare that I am thrilled by them anymore. Most still feature the same boring form factor from years ago, and other than faster processors, better cameras and brighter screens, there's really not much else to shout about.Even the upcoming Galaxy S26 phones, which could launch next month, are likely to offer only small improvements over their predecessors. That's what makes the latest folding innovation from Samsung really stand out from the crowd, as it's genuinely exciting.

The all-new Galaxy Z TriFold is like digital origami, with it unfolding along two hinges to reveal a massive 10-inch tablet-style screen.Of course, Samsung is no stranger to making folding devices, but this incredibly clever new model takes things to a whole new level. The TriFold has not yet gone on sale globally, but I managed to get my hands on it at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, and despite some initial hesitations, I can now see why it makes so much sense.Once folded shut, it feels pretty much like a standard smartphone, with a 6.5-inch screen on the front and a triple-lens camera on the rear.Where things get exciting is when you flip things open.In a matter of seconds, the TriFold transforms from a boring phone to a fully functioning tablet that's perfect for both work and play. Thanks to its huge screen size and wider 16:9 aspect ratio, it's far more useful than Samsung's Z Fold range of devices, which feature a more square design and an awkward 6:5 aspect ratio.@davesnellingtechHands on with Samsungs Galaxy Z TriFold #samsung #ces #galaxy All Eyes On Me - Instrumental - Dj Belite Pop a movie on the TriFold's panel, and you get a fully immersive experience that's as good as any standalone tablet. You can also run multiple apps side by side, easily edit photos or video, or enjoy a console-style gaming session on the move.

To help make things feel snappy, this foldable is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. There's also a large 5,600mAh battery that can be charged wirelessly, and it should survive life in your pocket thanks to a titanium hinge and Gorilla Glass. This is clearly one seriously exciting device that proves phones don't need to be a solid slab of metal or glass. It’s even IP48 dust and water resistant so it can withstand being dropped in the bath.I only had a limited time with TriFold, so I didn't get to test full battery life, overall power or how good the cameras are. What I did see, however, was an impressive gadget that offers two useful devices in one.The Z TriFold is undoubtedly one of the most exciting gadgets I've seen in a very long while Tech news, reviews and latest gadgets plus selected offers and competitions Subscribe Invalid emailWe use your sign-up to provide content in ways you've consented to and to improve our understanding of you.

It also feels super premium when you pick it up and even features an alarm if you try and fold it up the wrong way.Of course, like all new concepts, it's not totally perfect. My initial gripes include the TriFold being pretty thick once folded up, as well as being quite heavy. It lands on the scales at over 300g, which is almost double the weight of the slim Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.Once unfolded, you can also see two distinct creases in the tablet-style display, which is a bit annoying when watching content on the screen.Like with all folding phones,I have durability concerns, and the TriFold is also not compatible with Samsung's S Pen stylus, so you can't scribble on the screen.Weirdly, it doesn’t pack the latest top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip under its body, which feels like a bit of a miss for something so premium. The only other thing that could put you off buying the TriFold is the price and availability. It's expected that this phone will cost as much as $3,000 (£2,300) when it launches in the US.There's still no word if it will even make it to the UK.Yes, this latest device is ridiculously expensive and may be tough to find, but it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting gadgets I've seen in a very long while and proves that phones really don't need to be dull.
