OneDrive is getting a long-overdue upgrade on Mac

OneDrive for Mac has always been functional, but it's far from Microsoft's best application on the platform.Thankfully, Microsoft is finally giving it a long-overdue overhaul with Liquid Glass and other native enhancements.Microsoft announced that it has been working "over the past several years" to give OneDrive a proper upgrade on macOS.

The most important change here is the OneDrive menu in the macOS menu bar, which is now a native menu panel with translucent elements. When you open the menu, you now get a quick overview of the current synchronization status, along with shortcuts to the OneDrive folder and trash. The list of recently synchronized files is now under a sub-menu, which might annoy some people.

It's a native macOS menu, so it has a Liquid Glass design on macOS 26 and beyond, and full support for VoiceOver and keyboard navigation.Microsoft explained in a blog post, "The list of changes you’ve made to your OneDrive is just a click away, and shows you the same information as before, but in a more compact, easier way to understand.Additionally, images and videos that appear here show a helpful thumbnail of the content when available, making it easier to identify what files changed." The rest of OneDrive's interface elements have also been overhauled.

For example, alerts about deleting files now appear as native Mac dialogs. They still work the same and contain the same information, but they will fit in better with the rest of your applications.Microsoft didn't mention any changes to actual file synchronization in this update, or other updates to OneDrive's functionality.

The Mac client migrated to the Apple's modern file synchronization APIs a few years ago, and an Apple Silicon-native version finally rolled out to everyone in early 2022.The system requirements are also not changing—you only need an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 13 or higher, with the OneDrive folder on an APFS drive.Related 6 Reasons You Need an External Drive (Even If You Have Cloud Storage) Say goodbye to connectivity issues, data breaches, and monthly fees.
