This Nissan SUV has a 900-mile range, and its not fully electric

Electric vehicles often face the range wall, a common concern for car buyers when trying to decide whether to go full-electric or stick with a gasoline vehicle. If a person is taking frequent cross-country road trips, this range wall becomes a major factor in their buying decision. While the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (April 24th through May 3rd 2026) is filled with future concepts, Nissan already launched a high-tech midsize SUV before the show got underway: the NX8 Range-Extended EV (REEV).

Released in early April 2026, the NX8 combines an electric drivetrain with a gasoline generator. On display now in Beijing, the NX8 REEV has a total driving range of roughly 900 miles. For perspective, that is enough to drive from New York City to Jacksonville, Florida, without stopping for fuel or a charge.

The return of the Terrano Tianyan Architecture 2.0 While the production-ready NX8 handles long-range duties, the likely headline for fans and enthusiasts in Beijing may have been the return of the Terrano. The original Nissan Terrano, known in the U.S.as the Pathfinder, debuted in August 1986.

It was a quintessential Gen X vehicle, a rugged, body-on-frame SUV built on the Nissan Hardbody pickup chassis. The original Pathfinder featured triangular C-pillar windows and a manual transfer case, defined by physical gears and grease. It is sorely missed and fondly remembered among collectors and enthusiasts.

The 2026 Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept, unveiled in Beijing, is the next iteration of its off-pavement ancestor. While it retains a muscular stance on par with the Ford Bronco and Hyundai’s Boulder concept, revealed earlier in 2026 in New York, the hardware is modernized for a new generation of off-roaders.Built on Nissan’s Tianyan Architecture 2.0, the Terrano is expected to share the high-output powertrain of the new Frontier Pro PHEV, utilizing a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor to produce 402 horsepower and 590 lb-ft.

By adopting the streamlined silhouette and lighting signatures of the larger NX8, the Urban appears to be positioned as a still-premium vehicle, but more efficient in stop-and-go traffic than its competitors.Among the features meant to address the slog of daily driving, now available for the NX8, are the AI Zero Gravity Seats 2.0.An upgrade to the current Zero Gravity seats, found in popular Infiniti SUVs like the refreshed QX60, the 2.0 versions include 25 massage and support airbags to reduce driver fatigue.

The NX8 even includes a built-in refrigerator and freezer compartment for your lunch or snacks.Related 76% of drivers say luxury badges aren't worth it anymore—here's what they want instead Respondents prioritized financial security over a fancy new car.Posts By  Carl Anthony Nissan REEV vs.

PHEV Two ways to tackle range anxiety Nissan is using two distinct technical approaches to address range anxiety: Range-Extended EVs (REEV) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV).REEV Setup In the NX8, the gasoline engine never drives the wheels. Its sole job is to act as an onboard power plant, spinning a generator that feeds the electric motors.

This series-hybrid setup allows the engine to run at its most efficient RPM while providing instant electric torque. While the upcoming U.S.Rogue Hybrid e-POWER uses a similar gas-to-electric setup, the NX8 takes it a step further.

PHEV Setup The Terrano and Urban utilize a plug-in setup paired with e-AWD.Instead of a heavy mechanical transfer case, electric motors deliver torque to the wheels with the most grip. All models are forthcoming at "China Speed" The NX8, Terrano, and Urban belong to a development push Nissan calls "China speed." While legacy automakers typically take five years or more to develop a new model, Nissan has compressed that timeline to 24 months by leveraging its partnership with Dongfeng Motor Group.
