Microsoft have introduced managed private connectivity between their cloud platforms, allowing customers to establish dedicated network links between AWS and Microsoft Azure.AWS Interconnect – multicloud with Azure and Azure Multicloud Interconnect for AWS are now available in public preview.The two services work together to provide private cloud-to-cloud connectivity without requiring customers to build and operate the underlying physical connections themselves.The preview is available in AWS US East in Northern Virginia, US West in Northern California, Asia Pacific in Sydney, and Europe in Frankfurt.AWS said customers can manage connections through the AWS Management Console or command-line interface, while Azure provides management through its own portal.Reducing multicloud networking frictionMicrosoft said connecting Azure and AWS previously required customers to coordinate physical connectivity, routing, provisioning, monitoring, and lifecycle management across the two environments.“Customers told us they wanted a better way to connect workloads spanning AWS and Azure, and the old ways of doing it were clunky,” Robert Kennedy, vice president of Network Services at AWS, said.Under the new model, AWS and Microsoft manage the physical network infrastructure, capacity provisioning, VLAN configuration, Border Gateway Protocol sessions, and ongoing maintenance.
Customers instead provision a logical Interconnect while the underlying redundant infrastructure is managed by the two providers.Research commissioned by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority found that cloud customers faced technical barriers when using multiple providers, including networking and connectivity issues.Participants also cited the engineering time and resources required to make different cloud environments work together and maintain them.AWS said organisations can end up operating across multiple cloud platforms through acquisitions, software deployments spanning customer environments, and regulatory requirements.Independent industry data also points to the use of both AWS and Azure within enterprise cloud environments.Flexera’s 2026 State of the Cloud report, based on responses from 753 cloud professionals and executives, found that 84% of enterprise respondents were running some or significant workloads on AWS, while 82% said the same for Azure.Flexera reported that multicloud adoption increased by two percentage points from the previous year.
The report also said mergers and acquisitions or siloed applications can leave organisations operating across multiple cloud environments without a deliberately planned multicloud strategy.Before AWS Interconnect – multicloud, AWS said customers connecting its infrastructure with other cloud platforms could rely on third-party networking arrangements, dedicated interconnections, or the public internet.The two companies are using an open API specification for network interoperability.The specification defines how participating cloud providers provision and operate connections while allowing customers to use their existing cloud management interfaces.AWS introduced Interconnect – multicloud with Google Cloud before making the service generally available in April 2026.Oracle Cloud Infrastructure entered preview in May and reached general availability in July, followed by Azure’s public preview in August.The same interoperability specification is now used for AWS connections with Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, although regional availability and service status differ between providers.The addition of Azure also connects the world’s two largest cloud infrastructure providers by market share.
Synergy Research Group estimated AWS’s worldwide market share at 28% in the second quarter of 2026, followed by Microsoft at 20% and Google at 15%.The AWS-Azure implementation uses pre-provisioned capacity between the providers rather than requiring customers to arrange individual physical cross-connects.AWS said each connection is provisioned with four independent logical paths across separate interconnect facilities and routers.AWS said the four-path design can maintain connectivity during router maintenance and multiple simultaneous disruptions, including the loss of an interconnect site.AWS describes the architecture as targeting 99.99% availability.
Microsoft also targets a 99.99% availability SLA for Azure Multicloud Interconnect, although no SLA applies while the service remains in public preview.AWS uses MACsec encryption between AWS and Azure edge routers to protect traffic moving between the two networks.MACsec operates at the data-link layer and encrypts traffic travelling across the physical connection between network devices.AWS Interconnect – multicloud also includes a CloudWatch Network Synthetic Monitor at no additional cost.AWS documentation says the monitor provides round-trip latency and packet-loss metrics, with customers able to configure CloudWatch alarms against their own thresholds.Microsoft said Azure Multicloud Interconnect will support connection speeds of up to 100 Gbps when it reaches general availability.
During the public preview, AWS documentation limits connections to 1 Gbps.The service can also extend connectivity through Azure Private Link, providing a private network path to supported Azure services.Interoperability under scrutinyThe launch follows scrutiny of multicloud interoperability during the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority investigation into cloud infrastructure services.In 2024, AWS told the regulator that customers could use multiple clouds and switch providers when they wanted.Microsoft said it saw limited interest in integrated multicloud outside specialised situations, while acknowledging that using multiple clouds was not easy or convenient for customers.The CMA’s final report in July 2025 found that commercial and technical barriers restricted customers’ ability to switch providers and use and integrate multiple public clouds.In March 2026, the regulator said AWS and Microsoft had taken “material steps” to address interoperability and cloud egress fees, but said further work was still needed to make it easier for UK customers to use multiple providers and switch between them.Azure Multicloud Interconnect remains in public preview, and the companies have not announced a date for general availability.Microsoft said features, performance targets, and timelines can change before the service reaches general availability.AWS said Interconnect – multicloud can connect services including Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, AWS Transit Gateway, and AWS Cloud WAN with networks hosted by participating cloud providers.AWS and Microsoft said they plan to expand regional availability and bandwidth options after the preview.
