There are so many new things to watch on Netflix this month that the scroll could eat your whole evening.Russell Crowe's and a Tyler Perry movie are still dominating the Top 10, and the rest of the month looks amazing with documentaries about Mike Tyson, Norm Macdonald, and Matthew Perry on deck, right up to Halloween. But being the mensch that I am, I've done the scrolling for you.
We're still mining the October 1 movie refresh with a totally rewatchable buddy comedy, while my second pick is a gleefully unhinged true story about a strung-out bear that's coming on the 14th.My top pick this week is , with Ben Affleck directing himself as an L.A.mayoral hopeful whose son is kidnapped.
3 21 Jump Street A Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill buddy cop masterclass Like before it, the late '80s Fox cop drama, (the one that made Johnny Depp a teen idol) got a comedy reboot, but this one went raunchy and rated R.The 2012 comedy (the original was not) was reimagined by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in their live-action directing debut (they’d only directed at that point)—and the duo hit pay dirt. The movie follows Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum), high school opposites who become besties at the police academy.
After botching their first arrest, they’re reassigned to Jump Street, a revived undercover unit run by the volatile Captain Dickson (Ice Cube).Due to their boyish looks (and even less mature personalities), the pair are sent back to high school, undercover, to trace the dangerous drug H.F.S.to its supplier.
Schmidt ends up riding with the popular kids, including dealer Eric (Dave Franco) and Molly (Brie Larson), while Jenko gets stuck with the chemistry nerds.Tatum and Hill are amazing together (the sequence of them tripping on H.F.S.is comedy gold), so it’s no wonder a sequel was ordered—t, which is also streaming on Netflix.

That was all the inspiration Warden needed, but instead of the bear dying, he thought it'd be way more interesting, and funnier, if the bear went on a cocaine-induced rampage. With Elizabeth Banks secured as director, the world was gifted with an instant box-office hit, and one of the most over-the-top comedies of recent memory. This version of the story opens with a drug smuggler dumping his load of coke from his plane over a Georgia forest, where a black bear helps itself and goes hunting.
Soon, a mismatched cast of characters finds its way into the bear's path of destruction, including Sari (Keri Russell), a nurse looking for her daughter Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) and her friend Henry (Christian Convery) who've skipped school, a pair of unsuspecting European hikers, the drug syndicate guys looking for the dropped dope, and the cops. That ambulance chase scene is worth the watch alone.Like Cocaine Bear R Comedy Thriller Release Date February 24, 2023 Runtime 95 Minutes Cast See All Ray Liotta Alden Ehrenreich Christian Convery Scott Seiss Where to watch Close WHERE TO WATCH Streaming RENT BUY Director Elizabeth Banks Writers Jimmy Warden Budget $30–35 Million Studio(s) Lord Miller Productions, Brownstone Productions, Jurassic Party Productions Distributor(s) Universal Pictures Powered by Expand Collapse 1 Animals Ben Affleck co-writes, directs, and stars in this crime thriller Matt Damon was originally set to star in the intense Netflix crime thriller, But when Christopher Nolan comes knocking and wants to cast you as the lead in , you kinda have to drop everything.
It's no biggie, though, when the person who co-wrote and is directing the film (Ben Affleck) is also a two-time Oscar-winning actor, so what better way to pivot than to just cast yourself in the lead instead? Done and dusted.Affleck plays Mark Kimball, a slick politician running for mayor of Los Angeles whose young son, Denny, is taken in the middle of the campaign. The kidnappers want a huge sum of money, but Mark and his wife, Abigail (Kerry Washington), are given only hours to get it, which proves difficult as they've put pretty much everything they have into Mark's mayoral run.
