Everything you need to know about Marshals season 1

Taylor Sheridan’s new neo-Western television series premiered March 1 on CBS and Paramount+.The series shocked audiences right out of the gate, which I won’t spoil in case you haven't seen it yet.The newest chapter in the universe finds former U.S.

Navy SEAL and rancher Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) stepping into an entirely new role with three things—a new outlook, a new badge, and a brand-new mission. It’s time to saddle up, because we’re off to explore everything you need to know about season 1.What to know about the plot of Marshals The first thing you need to know about is that, while it is indeed a spin-off, it’s a totally new kind for the Dutton-verse.

We’re officially moving on from the traditional neo-Western and heading into an action-packed, very dangerous police procedural. Moreover, where previous spin-offs have served as prequels tracing the family’s generations of Western migration and property conflicts, serves as a sequel and spin-off moving well past the events of its flagship show. The series will be contemporary in nature and focus only on one family member.

In this new chapter, we’ll follow Kayce, the youngest Dutton sibling, as he severs ties with the Yellowstone Ranch in the wake of trauma and grief and makes the decision to join an elite U.S.Marshals tactical unit. There, he’ll combine his no-nonsense cowboy instincts with his SEAL training to deliver a new kind of frontier justice across the state of Montana.

Fresh faces make up Marshals' new cast of characters The next thing you need to know about the law enforcement procedural is that the series is merely based on characters created by Taylor Sheridan and co-creator John Linson, and Kayce’s face won’t be the only familiar one you’ll see.Brecken Merrill, who plays Kayce’s teenage son Tate, will be around, as will Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty, who are best known as Broken Rock chairman Thomas Rainwater and his right-hand man Mo, respectively.Personally, I’m stoked we’ll see more of Kayce and Rainwater’s relationship, especially after the beneficial decision they came to in the finale.

It has also been confirmed that country music singer-songwriter Riley Green will appear in multiple episodes in the role of Garrett, a troubled former Navy SEAL and buddy of Kayce’s who’s trying to put his past demons to rest. The rest of the show’s principal cast includes mostly fresh faces who will be playing Kayce’s fellow Marshal friends.Arielle Kebbel () will star as Belle, Ash Santos () as Andrea, Tatanka Means () as Miles, and—my biggest must-see reason—Logan Marshall-Green () as Cal.

What to expect out of Marshals If you’re expecting a -style narrative familiarity out of season 1, don’t.What you need to know is that, while the series will feature plenty of horses, open landscapes, and interpersonal disputes, it’ll be inundated with action, conflict, and violent crime. Not only must Kayce find a way to balance his family life with his legal duty as an officer of the law, but he must also weigh the heavy psychological cost of being a last line of defense.

It’s not just about whether he can deal with it, though. It’s also about whether Tate can handle it too. There’s also the question of how that will affect their father-son dynamic.

Additionally, Kayce will be grappling with his own internal struggle to balance federal law with his loyalty to the Broken Rock Reservation.Kayce and Rainwater are officially blood brothers, so this will be a very stressful line that Kayce will be walking.Early critics’ reviews warn that his loyalty to the Broken Rock Reservation will lead to a clash with his tactical team, specifically over his violent methods of justice.

Do you need to watch Yellowstone before diving into Marshals? If you’ve been living under a rock for the past eight years and have missed out on the , that’s your fault.I’m kidding.Seriously, if you haven’t seen the flagship series, don’t sweat it.

Technically, you don’t need to know the story, but if you’re wondering whether it’s a good idea to acquaint yourself with Kayce’s family life, history, and Dutton identity prior to diving into , that answer is a hard yes.Subscribe to our newsletter for Marshals deep dives Want thorough Marshals coverage? You can unsubscribe anytime.Regardless, should you forego my suggestion and choose not to get wrapped up in the Yellowstone Ranch story, what you need to know is that the new spin-off/sequel has nothing to do with ’s plot other than the fact that it’s following the path of a Dutton.Kayce’s history is recapped well enough in , but it never hurts to refresh a memory about where the family left off in 2024.

The last thing you need to know: No character is safe in Taylor Sheridan’s universe. While has only just begun, we still have a whopping 12 episodes to go this season, and from the looks of the trailer—and after that premiere episode, we’re saddled up for one hell of a wild ride.Though Taylor Sheridan is parting ways with Paramount, that won’t happen for another 3 years, so don’t cancel that subscription just yet.
